George W. Bush Immigration Speech

On the evening of Monday, May 15th 2006, President George W. Bush made a speech whose topic was immigration. The amount of contradictions and baseless claims is simply amazing. It must be that to George W. Bush, word and deed have no meaning, at least when it comes to his own. George W. Bush has been perfectly negligent when it comes to protecting the border. His track record clearly shows this. Yet Bush made claims (the ones below in red) intending for we the people to think something other than what his "performance" has demonstrated over the past 5 and a half years.

We're a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws.
Bush says this yet he has done little to ensure the immigration laws are being enforced. The practice of enforcing our laws is also not extended to things such as obtaining required FISA warrants in order to protect the privacy of American citizens. Separation of powers and the 4th ammendment mean nothing to this administration. Observing legal procedure also does not extend to himself and his staff when it comes to safeguarding classified information.

First, the United States must secure its borders. This is a basic responsibility of a sovereign nation. It is also an urgent requirement of our national security.
This nation was attacked on our soil on September 11, 2001. It has been almost 5 years now. Securing the borders is an obvious national security measure but this administration has failed to puruse the steps necessary to achieve this goal. Bush argues funding for the border patrol has been increased. While this is true, it obviously has not been enough. Some 12 million illegal immigrants are now in our country. One can only guess as to how many of them are terrorists.

Despite this progress, we do not yet have full control of the border, and I am determined to change that. Tonight I'm calling on Congress to provide funding for dramatic improvements in manpower and technology at the border.
Congress budgeted for 2000 border patrol agents to be added each year. Unfortunately, George W. Bush's budget pared this down to 210 agents. Here Bush wants people to think he is taking the initiative and congress has been standing in the way. But unfortunately, Bush has been the impediment. With his rhetoric, he is insulting his supporters, detractors and everybody who values honesty and has been paying a modicum of attention.

To secure our border, we must create a temporary worker program... A temporary worker program would meet the needs of our economy.
This fails even the most basic test of logic. A guest worker program does not prevent or disuade people from illegally crossing the border. Simple reasoning suggests it will increase the amount of people crossing illegally. Given that this administration has failed to lead and the borders remain largely unprotected, the proof is in the form of the increased amount of illegal immigrants we have here. Bush has been advocating a guest worker program (a desire of wealthy companies who fund his campaigns) for some time and it has disuaded no one. A guest worker program would help to lower the cost of labor by causing an increase in the amount of people competing for jobs. Corporations also have a burning desire to start bringing in more skilled workers to replace Americans who fill jobs such as programmers. Bush and corporate America really don't care much about the middle class. A guest worker program would also create an expanding sub-class of people and legimitize the exploitation of them. This is done routinely in places such as Saudi Arabia.

This is amnesty, and I oppose it. Amnesty would be unfair to those who are here lawfully, and it would invite further waves of illegal immigration.
Bush has admitted he is not much of a reader. But as President, one would hope that he would occasionally pick up a dictionary. Amnesty is defined as, " A general pardon granted by a government.". Bush is proposing to allow people who violated the law a program that leads to the reward of citizenship. How can that not be defined as amnesty? It is. Creating a guest worker program in the presence of porous borders would bring waves of illegal immigration. His very claim shows he really doesn't care about national security, immigrants or domestic workers.

In sum, it is truly amazing that Bush was once associated by some with the virtues of honesty and integrity. His words and deeds show he does not really care about "straight talk", national security, domestic workers, foreign workers or the long term health of this country. His allegiance lies with that of the short temr profit objectives of wealthy corporations. This is not leadership. Rather his actions demonstrate a crass hijacking of government by wealthy elites.
