Kay Bailey Hutchinson Perjury Comments Feb. 1999 vs. October 23, 2005

Kay Bailey Hutchinson on perjury and obstruction

Republicans ran on ad nauseum about truth, integrity and morals when it came to Bill Clinton. They asserted telling the truth during investigations is such a serious matter that it is necessary to impeach a sitting president in order to protect the rule of law. Even though the investigation was really about an affair with an intern, the republicans insisted it was necessary to establish morals and pursue any possible infraction of law in order to retain equal protection. My how things have changed. Now that it is the ethics of republicans being questioned, we find them singing a very different tune.

On February 12, 1999, Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-Texas) was quite specific in her condemnation of Bill Clinton, speaking quite forcefully about perjury, honesty and truth. Ascribing to herself the importance of morals and consistency, Kay Bailey Hutchison said the following about perjury and obstruction of justice....

The concept of equal justice under law and the importance of absolute truth in legal proceedings is the foundation of our justice system in the courts.

To say otherwise would be to severely lower the moral and legal standards of accountability that are imposed on ordinary citizens every day. The same standard should be imposed on our leaders.

If only the President had followed the simple, high moral principle handed to us by our Nation's first leader as a child and had said early in this episode `I cannot tell a lie,' we would not be here today.

But now that the GOP is faced with (again) an instance where they behaved immorally, we find republicans "running over their own tow line". On this day, it is not known whether or not Scooter Libby or Rove will be indicted for perjury or obstruction of justice (though it is CLEAR they were part of leaking classified information). But when asked about the possibility of perjury and obstruction indictments, Kay Bailey Hutchinson said the following on Tim Russert's Meet The Press on October 23, 2005,

And secondly, I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn't indict on the crime and so they go to something just to show that their two years of investigation was not a waste of time and taxpayer dollars. So they go to something that trips someone up because they said something in the first grand jury and then maybe they found new information or they forgot something and they tried to correct that in a second grand jury.

When it was Clinton being addressed, republicans such as Kay Bailey Hutchinson piously insisted it was necessary to protect the rule of law and impeach Clinton for the very serious offenses of perjury and obstruction of justice. But when it comes to republicans such as Scooter Libby and Karl Rove, Kay Bailey Hutchinson suddenly "thinks" perjury and obstruction of justice are "technicalities".

This is in addition to Ken Starr's investigation originating with an affair. Quite different is the leak investigation of this administration which deals with compromising classified information during a time of war. Not only do we now have the "moral"" commentary of Kay Bailey Hutchinson displaying galactic selection in its application, she is standing up for the compromising of classified information during war time.

It is amazing that anyone should believe the canard the GOP is filled with moral, consistent straight talkers. If the GOP voters have any shred of the integrity they claim, Kay Bailey Hutchinson will be rooted out in the next election.
