Rush Ignores the Obvious and Furthers His Hypocrisy

In a discussion about moral relativism with a caller, Rush makes a hugely inaccurate claim and follows it up with sweeping attack on liberals. Of course Rush failed to resolve his own behavior during his blanket condemnation and sets up a straw man argument. Rush DOES say what his listeners expect him to say.

You know what, I'm an experienced host and I'm not going to bite. I'm not going to ask you to tell me what you find more offensive because I know that you are engaging in what's practically known as a caller setup of the host. But let me tell you something. Let me tell you something, Mike. I have never throughout my entire career moistened my finger and stuck it in the air to figure out which way the wind is coming from and got myself in the way of it - meaning I've never said what I think people expect me to say.

Now wait just a second. You're not going anywhere so don't worry. I'm not going to hang up on you. It doesn't happen. I want to finish my point. So the moral relativists out there will say that somebody like me can no longer stand for anything that's right because I had a failing. Well, that's BS, because I don't define what's right or wrong - culture does, decency does, all these things that we as a society, humanity for thousands of years has evolved to, and that's what's happening now.

We are losing a whole bunch of cultural norms and we're headed down toward the gutter. Now, I've been warning people about this, so when people call here yesterday and expect shock and surprise, my reaction was one of tolerance for what happened, my reaction is, "Why are you surprised? This has been going on for years! Let's not act like this is something new."

The libs would love if morality were never a topic, or virtue were never a topic in our public discourse. What do you think they so hate social conservatives for? Why do you think people literally hate to listen to people talk about virtue and morality? There's only one reason: because they think they're being disqualified because they know they're not perfect, and they don't want to hear themselves be criticized. They don't think they're any different than anybody else, and they're right about that.

But there's nobody alive, anymore, who lives a perfect life, and if we're only going to allow those people, which are zero, to talk about these, we can never discuss it. This is a false construct, and it fits very neatly into the arguments of the Anything-Goes Crowd. Since none of us are perfect, then our imperfections ought to be celebrated! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we're all a bunch of oddballs. Let's celebrate what it is about us that makes us odd. And there you have the first step of many steps in the disintegration of decency.

Rush is an entertainer who constantly tells his listeners what they want to hear. They want to hear negative things about democrats, liberals and Clinton so Rush obliges. Rush hugely neglects to speak honestly about the failings of republicans, not because he is not smart enough to recognize them, but instead because that is what his listeners want. And when such a failing is unavoidable, Rush will rationalize it. A prime example is the debt and growth of government associate with this administration. Rush explains it all away as the administration being crafty in their effort to eradicate the democratic party. Rush's former producer said Rush doesn't believe even half of what he says. Judging from his rhetoric, this is obvious.

Rush asserts "liberals" reject the idea of morality. This is an inane statement. Of course people will disagree about what is comprised by morality but that is not to say a particular group rejects morality. It is doubtful that liberals "hate" social conservatives anymore than social conservatives hate liberals. Rush sure does alot to foment hatred towards liberals.

Rush goes on to make the classic straw man argument, suggesting "liberals" claim only those who are perfect can speak of morality. This fails on its face and attempts to change the obvious when considering Rush Limbaugh's behavior. Rush's personna, that which is a big component of selling his show, is that he is an example of moral, correct behavior. As we learned, Rush engaged in illegal activity and only spoke of it to his listeners AFTER it was exposed. Not many have a problem with Rush because of his personal issues. The problem that thinking people have with Rush is his hypocrisy. Rush sells himself as a strong voice of morality yet he was engaging in illegal activity and speaking to listeners while stoned.

It is true that anyone can speak of morality. Anyone can speak of particle physics or playing a twelve string guitar. But in order to sell one's self as an authority, one must have some sort of credentials. For years, Rush sold himself as an authority on morality, obviously to help listeners identify with him. But is it moral to make distortions, exhibit hypocrisy or tell people what they wish to hear in an effort to sell a show?

Rush Limbaugh continues to insult his listeners each day.
