Limbaugh Insults Listeners Intelligence During "Meet the Press" Discussion...

Rush is famous for distilling an issue down to an "us vs. them argument". In so doing, he focuses attention away from real questions and replaces with it with categorizing the people who hold particular views. Rush owes his listeners much better than that.

...what bothers me, or the context to me is: the guys that are going after the bad guys are the guys being attacked. The bad guys are getting a pass, and Bush is being attacked for an appearance on television. And I think it's a dangerous road to travel here, folks, to start getting into this.

There seems to be something else happening in the country, and that is the good guys are the bad guys. The good guys are the bad guys. Bush, and he did say this yesterday. This is one thing he did point out, he says, look it, I am well, these are my words, but he said the same thing: there's one guy taking the threat to this world seriously. And that's George W. Bush. Last week I pointed out we had this terrorist explosion in Moscow. We've had this Pakistani nuclear scientist admit to selling secrets. We had Libya give up its nukes and its weapons of mass destruction. Would any of this be happening had we not done what we did in Iraq? Bush didn't say it specifically like this, but I don't think the president, in an interview like this, is going to sit there and beat his chest, either. If he did we'd be thinking he's Bill Clinton.

Now, you can sit there and you can complain to me all day if you want about the president on Meet the Press and I'll listen to you, and you can sit there and say I'll probably agree with a lot of what you say. But at the same time, folks, we're going to look into some of the other things I think are a little larger here. We're also going to take a little look at John Kerry today. For all the things this guy said he wasn't going to do he's starting to do them. Now he's saying that going to the National Guard is no different than dodging the draft. He said this over the weekend. So not only is he hoping and seeking to denigrate Bush, he's hoping and seeking to denigrate the Guard. Talk about a morale builder. Yeah. Yeah, this is something presidents can't afford to do. Presidents cannot afford to sit there and defeat purposely the morale of people whose job it is to defend and protect the country, on the front lines. So I think it's just important to keep all this stuff in perspective. You know, too often, wh ether it's a Meet the Press interview or whether it's anything else, way too many people seem to forget that September 11th happened.

Rush forgot the fact that Bush sought out the interview with Russert on Sunday morning. Clearly, Bush is starting his re-election campaign. Bush was not "attacked". There are very legitimate questions regarding the policies of this administration, particularly Iraq. We were attacked by Al-Queda, not Sadam. The administration has yet to provide any evidence to back up their loud, threatening rhetoric leading up to the war, no WMD have been found, nor has there been any substantive evidence regarding the unlikely allegation which holds Sadam and Ossama were conspiring together. This administration led us into an unprecendented pre-emptive war. The "dangerous road" is not asking questions in a set of circumstances such as this. A "dangerous road" also comes in the form of an entertainer constantly suggesting it is not ok and unpatriotic to ask questions and disagree.

Rush goes on to claim the Iraqi invasion is why Libya gave up its weapons program for fear of an invasion. Anybody who considers the overstretched state of our military and draining credibility of this administration in the public and world community would realize an invasion of Libya is highly doubtful. Far more likely is Libya deciding to do what is in its own best economic interest. In the case of Pakistan, it changed its direction primarily due to the vision of General Musharaff. It makes no sense to suggest the Pakistani scientist came clean becuase he feared an invasion. The tragic events of 9/11 brough alot of leaders and people together. The invasion of Iraq has resulted in a split and eroded our credibility.

Rush charges Kerry with "seeking to denigrate the national guard". The role of the national guard was far different in the Viet Nam era. It was recognized as a way to avoid going to Nam and often, it was the offspring of wealthy, well connected politicians and business leaders who were able to exploit it. In discussing Bush's "military record", these are quite relevent facts. The odds of going to Nam if you were in the national guard were about 1 in 66,000. It is no surprise the Lt. Gov. Of Texas intervened on Bush's behalf. This is what Kerry was talking about. Rush should at least discuss it honestly with his listeners.

The guard and reserves began to take a different role beginning in the term of George H. Bush. Talking about the far different National Guard during the time of George W. Bush has no relevance to today's guard and in no way denigrates it.

Rush insults his listeners by misinforming them through the use of spin and distortion. It is unfortunate they are willing to sacrifice awareness and knowledge and instead, have their prejudices affirmed.
