Ties, Connection, Contact, Relationship : GOP Wiggle Words

Are we still on that? Did this not get settled last week? You've got to be kidding me! You mean the media is still out there staying that there are no ties between Al-Qaeda and Iraq? The New York Times had a story over the weekend and says there were, now. The New York Times is eager to correct its big mistake because they're out there pointing out that there was Baghdad got hold of Al-Qaeda in the 90s. The point is these people were never in favor of preemption.

The right (and Rush) is conveniently mixing up ties, relationship, connection and contact. Intelligence agencies often have "contacts". That is what they do. It is quite likely there were such contacts as shown by the 9/11 commission. But contacts are quite different than relationship, such as what existed between Al-Queda and the Taliban. There has been ZERO substantive evidence showing any sort of cooperation between Al-Queda and Sadam's regime. The Islamic Fundamentalist movement comprised a threat to Sadam's power. He was a secular leader not about to step down to advance a caliphate.

The Pakistani ISID has had and continues to have regular contacts. Rogue members of the ISID not only have had contacts with Al-Queda, but they have given intelligence and in some cases, material support. But we did not invade Pakistan.

While Rush insists, "this was settled last week", he left out the part where the 9/11 Commission determined there was no working relationship between Al-Queda and Sadam in the attack on 9/11.

Rush also fails to mention that each time an effort is made by the administration to prove the alleged relationship, it fails. Dogulass Feith was compelled to present evidence backing repeated assertions that Sadam and Al-Queda had a relationship. The only thing he produced was some raw intelligence which as leaked to the press. The raw intelligence amounted to nothing more than uncorraborated, unsubstantiated, unverified heresay. The administration back in October used a statement from a prisoner at Guantanamo to assert "Iraq trained Al-Queda terrorist in chemical weapons manufacturing". Under questioning, the prisoner recanted his statement.

There has been ZERO evidence to prove any sort of working relationship between Al-Queda and Sadam. Rush has no problem propagating a myth to his gullible listeners, even while Americans die as the result of invading a country that posed no threat and tax payers are spending over 1 billion per week.
